SHAWL Durwood E.
82, of Clarkston, Michigan, passed into eternity on January 5th, 2019, surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Shawl was born on March 25, 1937, in Fairmont, Minnesota to Lloyd and Jessie (Menike) Shawl. As a youth, he was very active in glee club, drama, band, and athletics. He continued in these activities, when he entered college at General Motors Institute in Flint, Michigan, to pursue a degree in engineering. After graduation, he began a long and fulfilling career as an engineer for Pontiac Motors, from which he retired in 1995. He met his beloved wife, Stephanie, while working at GM and they were married on August 5, 1961. Soon after, they welcomed their eldest daughter, Lisa. The following year, they welcomed their youngest daughter, Renee, while stationed at the GM Proving Grounds in Tempe, Arizona. He was the proud grandfather of Sarah (Jake), Luke, Caroline, Trevor and Griffin. Throughout his life, Durwood was a very active individual with many and varied interests. He took flying lessons and flew his family on many exciting adventures. He was an avid woodworker; a hobby that brought out the artist in him. He was a senior member of the National Ski Patrol. He was an avid boater and sailor. He maintained a second home in Harbor Springs where he was instrumental in helping to organize the Northern Michigan GM Retirees activities as well as being a very active and beloved member of the Little Traverse Yacht Club. Durwood was a friend to all and would do anything for those he knew and loved. He was also a devoted family man who doted on his wife, children, and grandchildren. He provided for every need and was a fine example of what it means to be a husband and father.

Thank you for allowing me the wonderful experience of knowing Durwood. Even though it was what ended up to be his last months, and he could do only the most limited of speech and movements, I could tell he was an exceptional person. His friendship is something I will cherish. I will miss our visits at NoWL. Deepest sympathies to all who knew him.
