MEAGHER Janice Faye
69, passed on peacefully at home in Waterford on June 13, 2017 after a brave battle with bladder cancer. Preceded in death by her father and mother, John and Myrtle Abel. Survived by her loving husband Larry Hould, daughter Jennifer (Richard) Meagher-Heilstedt, brothers Gary (Alicia) Abel, David (Pat Ruelle) Abel and Brad (Linda) Abel, stepson Chris (Robyn) Hould, step-grandchildren Kyle and Lyla Hould, Aunt Helen Abel, many cousins, nieces and nephews and a group of friends too numerous to name, but all dear to her, even the ones she smacked in the back of the head when they were out of line.
Jan was born in Waterford in February 1948 and attended Stringham Elementary, Crary Junior High and Waterford Township High School, graduating in 1966. She obtained her teaching degree from Western Michigan University and began her teaching career at Waterford Mott in 1970. It was shortly thereafter that she began coaching three sports, basketball, volleyball and softball. She took to the softball coaching best and went on to be voted into the Michigan High School Coach’s Hall of Fame in 1997. “Ma” to her students and ball players, Jan remained friends with many of them. After obtaining her masters from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1998, Jan moved to Clarkston High School, first as an assistant principal, then the principal in 2003 and retiring in 2010.
Jan and Larry reconnected in 2005 at Larry’s 40th class reunion and married in the Upper Peninsula in September of 2013. And thanks to Larry, Jan finally got the grandkids she’d always wanted, Kyle and Lyla, who affectionately referred to her as Grand Jan.
In 2013, Jan was honored by the Waterford Foundation for her commitment to the Waterford School District. Born and raised in Waterford, she never lived anywhere else except for in the past few years when she and Larry spent the winter in Destin, Florida. She made the most of her retirement, golfing as much as possible, enjoying time at the family cabin in the UP and spending her daughter’s inheritance at the casino.
Special thanks to the staff of St. Joseph Hospital and Hospice who took such good care of Jan through her numerous stays.
Family will receive friends Tuesday, June 20th and Wednesday, June 21st from 2:00 – 9:00 p.m at COATS FUNERAL HOME-CLARKSTON (8909 Dixie Hwy. Clarkston). Visitation will also take place on Thursday at CLARKSTON HIGH SCHOOL from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service.
Memorial Service will be Thursday, June 22, 2017 at 12:00 p.m. at CLARKSTON HIGH SCHOOL (6093 Flemings Lake Rd., Clarkston).
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in Jan’s name to the Waterford Foundation for Public Education, Gleaner’s Food Bank or a cancer charity of your choice.

You were a special lady. RIP Jan. ??
Coach Jan, a wonderful educator and administrator that always made my days at Clarkston High School a little better. Her smile, attitude and humor made the PE/coaches office a better place. Coached against her in the early and mid 70's and then really got to know her in the late 90's as a terrific administrator. A great way for me to both start and end my career. We will all miss you! God Bless!!
What a great, fun and happy teacher and person to be around. She made school and learning fun unlike all the rest. So glad to have had her. The best teacher Waterford schools ever had. Also about the only teacher that liked me.....
God Bless you, may you Rest In Peace.
