Can I sign my own cremation authorization?
Unfortunately, you cannot sign a cremation authorization for yourself. Thus, it is crucial to discuss your wishes with your loved ones and prearrange your funeral by filling out the necessary cremation forms.

 

Can I have a visitation and funeral with a cremation?
Yes, we at Coats Funeral Home will help you plan a cremation to include whichever service and viewing time you desire. We also can provide an environmentally-friendly cremation casket.

 

Is Cremation less expensive than burial?
Cremation can be less expensive than a burial. It does not involve purchasing a burial vault or outer grave liner, cemetery property, paying grave opening and closing fees, or grave maintenance fees. Cremation is significantly less expensive if you choose not to have a memorial or funeral service.

 

What costs are incurred in cremation, which are not incurred for burial?
First, there is a cost for the cremation itself, which takes place at the crematory normally located at a cemetery. This charge ranges from $175 to $250 plus a cremation approval fee of $20 to the Oakland County Medical Examiner for deaths occurring in Oakland County, and $75 for deaths occurring in Wayne County (this fee varies from county to county). Also, you may desire to purchase a container or urn for the ashes.

 

What can be done with cremated remains after cremation?
Your family may do whatever you wish with the ashes of your loved one. We do not recommend scattering them in lakes or burial on property, which may be sold in the future or without permission from the property owner due to potential legal liabilities.

 

Some options for cremated remains include, but are not limited to:
- Purchasing an urn
- Burying ashes in a cremation space at a cemetery
- Burying in a standard adult grave where another burial has or will take place
- Mailing or shipping cremation remains to other parts of the country or world.
